I often talk about my one nephew here on our blog, but there is something that I have never shared with all of you and today, I am going to tell you about it. My nephew C has Autism and Tourette’s Syndrome so with great honor today, I get to introduce you to the My Pal for Autism Awareness Doll. With April being Autism Awareness Month, I would first like to share some important information with you.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects about 1 out of 150 children. The main characteristics that you will usually notice about a person with Autism are: They have difficulty with social skills (things you need to know how to do when you are with others), like looking at the person, answering, taking turns, playing together; they have a hard time communicating, especially when trying to talk about the way they feel; they have some unusual or different behaviors, like making noises or movements when you don’t expect them to. You can find a lot of information about Autism online and I would love it if you explore some of that information when you have some time.
The company that markets and sells the My Pal and My Sibling products is called LorettaRose, LLC. which is a family owned business based in New Jersey, USA. They are a for-profit company with a charitable vision, advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities.
My Review: As I just previously stated, raising awareness for Autism is something that is very important to me and my family, so I was super excited to receive the My Pal for Autism Awareness Doll in the female version to review for all of you. The beautiful doll stands 18″ tall and features brown hair, blue eyes, soft body and poseable plastic head, arms and legs. She wears a denim jumper that is accented with a puzzle print chest pocket, a white blouse with navy blue trim, little white anklet socks and white “mary-jane” styled shoes. She has a puzzle print ribbon in her hair that perfectly matches the pocket on her denim jumper dress. Isn’t she darling? I think so!
She comes with an 8 page Autism Awareness Booklet that will tell you a little more about the company, great information on Autism itself and a few pages in the back of the booklet, so that your child can write about Autism (their thoughts, stories and ideas). I think that is a really cool way to get your child to talk about Autism in a non-threatening way.
I decided to use my new My Pal for Autism Awareness Doll as a teaching tool and invited my 2 nephews, 1 god son, 1 niece and my grand daughter over for some “play time” with Nanny. I printed off some information from the web about Autism and sat them all down to talk to them about Autism and how they should treat C when they are around him. I felt this was important to do because kids often tease and bully other kids who are not like them. Hopefully, my little teaching class will help prevent any of that from going on and it was really nice that they asked me a lot of questions about Autism and hopefully I helped in that aspect, in regards to educating them on Autism. I plan on scheduling a few more of these “educational” play dates with the kids and talking with them some more about Autism.
Regarding the doll herself, I think she is absolutely beautiful! I love how she was designed, a true high-quality collectible doll. Her hair is silky soft and all of her clothing were impeccably made. This doll’s design was well thought out and just a beautiful doll to own. I think the My Pal for Autism Awareness Doll makes a great gift for any child who has Autism or purchase them and use for teaching aids. If you are just a doll collector, well, the doll would make a perfect addition to your doll collection too!
