Did you know that May is National Mobility Awareness Month? I didn’t know that until now and I think that is really cool! The month of May is a great time to bring awareness about people who have disabilities who are living a full life. Just because some people have disabilities or mobility issues doesn’t mean they can’t live a very mobile and active life.
NMEDA and National Spokesman Mike Savicki are asking people to submit their stories to be showcased by national and local media which helps to bring more awareness during this very special month of May. Through online communities, NMEDA’s Facebook page, blog and web site, they will share stories with all of you from local heroes, people who are dealing with mobility challenges or people who overcame their mobility challenges. Isn’t that cool? I think so! I always find those type of stores so inspiring.
Local heroes, family, friends and even complete strangers who are inspired by their stores are encouraged to vote on their favorite stories on the web site for a chance to win a custom Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV). Once the votes are in the winners will be chosen and revealed on a national television show. That is super cool! A minimum of 3 custom WAV’s will be given away and we all know that they can really change someone’s life.
Did you know that over 18 million people living in the United States and Canada have mobility issues? In addition, 6 million of them are veterans. Wow, I never imagined it was so many but now I am glad to know that. People with disabilities count for the second largest minority here in the United States. I am glad that there are mobility equipment manufacturers, dealers, certified driver rehabilitation specialists and other professionals in communities who are dedicated to helping improve the lives of those with mobility issues and disabilities.
What is a local hero you might ask? Well, it is defined as anyone in your community (a caregiver, veteran or a person with a disability) who is dealing with or trying to overcome a mobility problem. I think we all know at least one local hero in our own communities, right?
The National Mobility Awareness Month is sponsored by the great company called NMEDA and we would like to invite you to nominate a hero in your community and once the stores are posted to place your vote. In addition to NMEDA you will find several other companies partnering with them to promote this great contest during National Mobility Month. (BraunAbility, Bruno Independent Living Aids, Vantage Mobility International, Toyota, Chrysler and SanTan Hondo Superstore in Chandler, Arizona).
I hope you take a few minutes out of your day today and go on over to their web site and check it out!
