My daughter is almost 27 years old and just like most young adults these days, she has gotten herself into debt. I am thankful that she has came to us for some debt help and we are going to try and help her out as much as we can.
My daughter didn’t get into debt by acting all wild and spending her money foolishly, nope, not at all. You see, my almost 3 year old little grand daughter had some serious health problems last spring which required a lot of medical treatment and surgery.
After my daughter’s health insurance company paid their share of my grand daughter’s medical costs, the doctors and hospitals started harassing my daughter for the remaining charges on all of these bills. We sat down with our daughter and added up all of the unpaid and leftover charges which amounted to over $10,000! Oh my, that is one heck of a debt for a single mother to handle!
We have advised our daughter to look into some debt negotiation to see if those people can help negotiate a lower payment plan for her and/or to see if they can help to get some of these amounts lowered or even dropped.
I think it is really terrible that when someone has decent health insurance coverage, that these doctors and hospitals can come after you for any charges that were not paid in full by your insurance company.
In my personal opinion, I feel that these doctors and hospitals should have to accept (in full) the money that they get from your insurance company and leave it at that. I looked over her bills in fine detail and what they got from her insurance company was more than fair!
It really irritates me that our health care system and insurance program system is totally screwed up! It only takes one serious accident or one serious medical illness and you could be in debt too! This whole thing just doesn’t seem fair to me at all.
Anyway, I just hope that we can help our daughter get this medical debt paid off and paid off soon as she can hardly take it anymore with all those bill collectors calling her up and harassing her like this. What a shame!
I sure hope our medical system and health system changes some day soon and hopefully those changes are for the better!
