Cruising down the highway will reveal the large numbers of storage facilities that you have to choose from. Do we really need all these storage facilities? Apparently so, as I have recently realized that I need a Sandy storage facility, not one in Draper or Salt Lake because I dont want to drag my stuff all the way up there. I have created a checklist for what we should look for when deciding which storage facility is right for us.
Proximity
This will depend on how frequent we will need to visit our unit. If it is more than once a week we should look for a facility that is close to our home or workplace.
Cleanliness
Lets be honest, many storage facilities are not well kept. A few signs to look for are whether or not the grass is cut, the employees friendly, and the office is clean. If they pass that test then good job because most do not.
Security
Nobody would steal from a storage facility right?!?..Wrong!! I can’t even count how many horror stories I have heard from people losing their belongings from a storage facility. Ask how many cameras are on their property and how many times someone has broken into their facility. A good way to gauge the secure of a business is to look at their locks. If the facility is still using pad locks then that is like swimming in shark infested waters with an open wound.
Climate Control
Ok here is a new one. Just because your junk is locked up safe and secure doesn’t mean it will be damage free when you come to pick it up. Climate can have a huge effect on whether or not your personal belongings will be damaged or not. Uncontrolled units can speed up the process of deterioration to wood and metal. Many times these climate controlled units come at a higher cost but if you are storing something nice it will be worth it.
Affordable
Make sure this is not the only checkbox you have for determining which is the right storage unit. This is why I put this one last. Also, if a storage facility advertises one price but when you go to pay they add a lot of hidden fees you should run out as fast as you can. One thing I have noticed is if they try to be sneaky with advertising most likely they are sneaky with other areas of their business. I am glad that most storage units in Sandy Utah do not participate in this advertising model.
