Holiday Memories with My Dog
There is a reason why the saying Dogs are a man’s best friend exists and is true. Dogs have been a part of our household ever since my hubby and I were married 17 years ago. I had 2 dogs at different times growing up but I was never overly attached to them the way our dog is to us now. He is part of the family, almost like another child, if that isn’t crazy.
Holidays are a special time for everyone and I think even Louie, my dog, knows that something special is happening. Lots of cooking is going on with specialty meals and treats being made. The decorations come out which means different smells and scents for him to figure out. And the Christmas tree is Lou’s favorite thing of all time!
Last year we decided to have a live tree and it was so full and beautiful. It really was stunning as it sat in the front window so everyone driving by could see it sparkle and shimmer. When Lou discovered it, he was thrilled! That meant no more having to go out and pee. He decided that the live tree was a special present just for him and we were so sweet to bring in for him. WOW! What awesome parents he had!
Yes Louie, peed on the tree several times. We had a real tough time convincing him that it was not his tree to pee on whenever he felt like it… He still had to go outside like all of the other dogs in the neighborhood. While it was funny as heck, it was also so annoying to clean up after him!
We worked through that problem and pretty soon he got it that he was barred from peeing in the house, just like normal. He still got a stocking hung by the fireplace, just for him and he was excited about that because the cats only had one and they had to share it.
Christmas morning when all of the paper was flying, Louie was there lying on his bed, right by the crackling fire in the fireplace, watching and he got to open his stocking. He found several new play toys like indestructible bouncy balls, a kong and lots of awesome rawhide chew toys that he loved. His favorite item was a giant Christmas Wreath made out of rawhide that actually took him days to work on instead on an hour. I know he was thinking – “YAY! Santa found the best things for me ever!”
Louie enjoyed opening his presents and playing with his new toys too. He got worn out pretty fast and took a nice long nap right next to his Christmas Wreath, just in case the cats wanted to sniff it. He is a funny guy!
Louie sure has become an important part of our family. He is the subject of many holiday memories, photos and conversations. Even his grandmother person calls and talks to him. He is one special guy and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
I am discussing my favorite holiday memory with a pup in partnership with DogFenceDiy, the invisible fence alternative. DogFenceDiy wants all dogs to have a comfortable holiday season.
