A Princess and Her Garden Book Review

I think many women have the “I have to do more” gene in their psyche. I don’t know if we are born with it or it is instilled from our mothers. Women tend to do for everyone else first and then, if there is time, we will take care of ourselves. We feel selfish if we take care of us first which allows us more energy, patience and time to care for others and it is something that many women struggle with for years. Now there is help for us!

I was sent a new book to review that deals with women like us and it helps us to learn to care for ourselves. In this beautiful book called A Princess and Her Garden (Center for Applications of Psychological Type, December 2011), renowned psychologist and coach Patricia Adson, Ph.D. echoes the stories of many women who have learned to put others’ needs first, and may have forgotten how to take care of themselves.

This book is full of lovely illustrations similar to a child’s book and by using the fable of a princess who tends to everybody’s garden except her own, Dr. Adson guides the reader through an internal reflection process, gently pointing out the corners of her life that require attention.

A Princess and Her Garden also includes an interactive guided journal, whose detailed questions help move the reader from being the “Princess of Other People” to becoming the “Queen of Herself.” These sections are where the author will ask specific questions to help you write about your journey and past. It is a great way to reflect back and write your own story as you look at your history and form your future. There is no right or wrong way to approach this. There are many different sections that help us identify the weeds in our life, our gifts, change, maintenance and many other steps in our lives. This is a great book to help identify who you are, where you are in life and where you want to be.

With the New Year upon us, many people set goals and dreams that they want to accomplish in the coming year. This would be a great book to add to your reading list if you want to work on you and your own garden. Learning to become the Queen of Yourself can take a bit of insight, but what comes out in the end can make your New Year spectacular! Perfect for a friend, parent or a book club setting. I think you will enjoy the discovery’s you make about yourself.
