We Are Thinking About Purchasing Another Home

Back in the spring of 2010 my husband and I purchased a second home from my great aunt who is 86 years old. You see, my great uncle had passed away the year before and my aunt could no longer afford the home on her

Understanding Medicare Part D and Why You Should Have It

My great uncle passed away a little over 3 years ago and he was like a grandfather to me…to this day, I still miss him! Once he died we assumed the role of taking care of my great aunt who is 86 years old. We take care of her medical decisions, financial decisions and basic day to day decisions that need to be made on her behalf.

Since I am only 44 years old and have never been on Medicare I really had to take some time to educate myself on Medicare and Medicare Part D so that I made wise and informed decisions on my great aunt’s behalf. Today I thought I would share some information with you incase you are on medicare or taking care of someone who is.

Medicare Part D is very important to have because it is the plan that helps to pay for prescriptions and this plan is offered by private insurance companies that are Medicare approved. When you first qualify for medicare it is extremely important to take out a Medicare Part D supplement right away…so that you don’t get penalized for taking it out later. For the most part, you are responsible for paying a premium or deductible for this coverage and then the plan helps to cover your medicaly necessary prescriptions and medications.

As we all know…prescriptions & medication costs are through the roof and most people can’t afford them on their own and as we age our need for prescription medications increases so it is important to add this Medicare Part D plan onto your regular Medicare insurance plan. After all, no one enjoys getting sick and going in debt when there are other things in your life you want to spend YOUR money on.

Once my great aunt qualified for Medicare we got her one of the supplemental Medicare Part D plans and I am so glad that we did. Since the 3 years during my uncle’s passing my aunt has fell and broken her back twice, torn ligaments in her leg and knee, been sick numerous times with the flu and various infections and has had 3 surgeries. If we wouldn’t have gotten the extra Medicare Part D she surely would of ran out of money by now and have had to move in with one of us. Thankfully, we have that additional coverage which is helping her to afford to stay into her own home instead of going into debt with medical prescription costs.

So there you have it, my thoughts and 2 cents on why every American should get Medicare Part D as soon as they qualify for Medicare benefits.

We Opened Up A Savings Account For Our Grand Daughter

We Opened Up A Savings Account For Our Grand Daughter

American MoneyWe became first-time grandparents 1 1/2 years ago to a gorgeous little baby girl who has now become a gorgeous little toddler. One of the things we wanted to do when she was born was to open up a savings account in her name and then as grand parents we wanted to consistenly deposit money into the account for her. We thought this was a good idea but never got around to it until now.

There are hundreds of banks, credit unions and credit card companies that now offer online savings accounts to make it easier for parents and grand parents to save money for their children and grandchild and Discover Bank is just one of them. When looking for an online savings account provider…make sure you do your homework and only go with a reputable provider.

We took our time and really educated ourselves about savings accounts before we took the plunge and opened one for her. You really need to educate yourself about restrictions on savings accounts, withdrawal restrictions and deposit restrictions before you even open one. Another thing you should look at is how much interest will you make on the money you are depositing into that account. We tried to look for one that had a good interest rate so that we got a good return on our savings investment.

If you don’t know a lot about this topic you can find some great reliable information over at SavingsAccount which we found very helpful. They have a nice review section where you can read reviews about the various banks and companies that offer online savings accounts aka online bank reviews. One of the things I learned was that you need to check out whether or not the bank has a fee that you will incur if you (or in our case, our grand daughter) would withdraw the money before a certain period of time.  One of the BEST benefits of going with an online bank is that they all have higher interest rates than brick and mortar offline banks, after all…you want to make the most money (in interest) with your savings investment.

We figure that since we are starting now (she is 2 1/2 years old) that hopefully we can save $10,000 or more into her savings account before she reaches the age of 18 so that she can withdraw the money and use it as a down payment towards further education. We are not picky on whether she uses the savings towards a technical school, community college or a 4 year degree university… just as long as she gets some type of additional education once she graduates from high school.

Do any of you have savings accounts set up for your children and/or grandchildren? If so, I would like to hear about it.
