A few years ago my 85 yr. old uncle passed away, he was like a grandfather to me. Once we had the funeral arrangements done & over with we were left the task of taking caring of my 84 yr. old aunt. The idea of our new caregiver job was frightening to say the least because we didn’t know where to turn for help or information. As with most people who reach the age of 80 and beyond they are often living with some type of health or handicap problem as with the case of my aunt.
Today I would like to introduce you to NMEDA who is a non-profit trade association who educates consumers on how to purchase products from qualified NMEDA dealer.
NMEDA does not sell any type of products themselves. They are the only association that promotes safe driving and equiptment for disabled people. They are a not-for-profit association and all members must adhere to their strict safety standards as enforced by the National Highway Safety Administration. The dealers who are associated with NMEDA sell handicap vans and vehicle modifications for handicapped drivers.
When dealing with handicapped people…no two people are alike. It is important to get customized help that is geared specifically for the person who needs it. There is no one shoe fits all when it comes to helping your handicapped loved one to lead an independent life with a vehicle customized to their specific needs.
NMEDA has a quality assurance program known as QAP and it’s the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the Adaptive Mobility Equiptment Industry. It is based on the principle that in order to satisfy customers consistently, companies must have a systematic and documented approach to quality.
I know how tough it is to be a caregiver of an elderly disabled person and I know NMEDA can help you when it comes to caring for your disabled loved one. As my aunt has said to me, “Shelly, it is important to me that I can go out when I want to go out and do my shopping and errands when I want to do them.”
I encourage you to check out NMEDA’s web site and take a look around. There is a lot of great information over there to help you find an accredited dealer near you. (check out their dealer locator by typing in your zip code). You can come back to my post here and let me know where the closet dealer is to you.
As caregivers of the disabled it is important to make them feel loved and to help them have as much independence as possible.
