Kid’s Crafts: Easy-to-Make Snowman Ornaments

During the holiday season I enjoy sitting down with my grandchildren and whipping up some easy-to-make ornaments for their Christmas tree. Last year we made a total of 12 different ornaments and this year we’re hoping to do the same.

My little grandson is only 3 years old, so I needed to come up with a project that he could do and one that my 9 year old granddaughter would also enjoy. This ornament can be made by children ages 3 and up with some adult supervision. Older children can make them all on their own.

Notes: You will need metal mason jar rings to make this project. You can buy white colored metal rings or paint rings that you already have. I had a slew of gold metal rings that were starting to pit and rust…I cleaned them up and then spray painted them white. A great way to recycle some of those old mason jar rings. If you want to make this project even easier, omit the black acrylic paint and use a black Sharpie Marker instead.

White Wide-Mouth Mason Jar Rings (see note above)
Sheet of White Craft Foam
Wiggle Eyes 1/2″ Diameter
Orange Pipe Cleaner
Black Acrylic Craft Paint and Paint Brush
Water Dish and Paper Towels
All-Purpose Quick-Drying Craft Glue
Scissors
Metallic String (Hanging Cord)
Pencil or Pen

Use a pencil to trace around the metal mason jar ring on white craft foam. Use scissors to cut inside your drawn line. You want your white craft foam circle to fit inside the mason jar ring. Use the craft glue to glue the foam circle inside the jar ring.

Next, you’ll want to decorate the snowman’s face. I recommend doing his orange “carrot” nose first. Cut a 2″ piece of orange pipe cleaner and fold it in half. Bend it slightly at an angle to resemble a carrot-shaped nose. Glue onto the snowman’s face. Next, glue on 2 wiggle eyes. You only need a tiny dot of glue, don’t over do it as you don’t want the glue oozing out from underneath the eyes.

You have 2 options when it comes to making his mouth. You can use a medium-tip black Sharpie Marker and draw on the dots or you can dip the end of a paint brush in black acrylic craft paint and dot them on. The choice is your’s on how you want to do them.

To finish up you’ll need to make a hanger for your snowman ornament. You can use metallic hanging cord (we used green colored cord) or you can use clear fishing line. We cut a piece of hanging cord measuring 5″ in length and tied it into a loop. We then glued it onto the back of our snowman ornament.

Once you have it all assembled you’ll want to let them dry for 2-3 hours to allow the paint and glue to dry. Once done, they’re ready for hanging! Use them to hang on your Christmas tree, as package tie-ons or hang them from your favorite wreath or garland.

This is so cute too. I am going to try regular metal lids off jars. That way the girls will have many to make at little cost to us. Thank you for the idea.

  4. This is an adorable craft for the kids. I can see children making these and giving these as Christmas gifts to grandparents. Another great craft idea!
