Fun Family Time – Rollerskating

Doc's Family Fun Center - RollerskatingIn the 1980’s I used to hang out at a local rollerskating rink. Matter of fact, that’s where I met my husband Sam. We used to spend a lot of time rollerskating as it was the “in thing” to do in the 80’s. You know…the era of disco dancing and skating! I got pregnant with our daughter in 1985 and we haven’t been rollerskating since!

Last month our granddaughter turned 9 years old and we hosted her birthday party at a local skating rink. She had about 30 guests at her party (adults and children) and everyone had a great time.

The adults who attended the party really enjoyed reliving some moments from their childhood and many of them told us that they haven’t skated in over 25+ years. In case you didn’t know, it’s a great form of cardio exercise and your body can get a really good workout.

Since I’m recovering from knee replacement surgery, I didn’t lace-up…but my husband did! He slapped those skates on and got out onto the floor with everyone else. For the first 10-15 minutes he went around pretty slow, but then he found his old groove! LOL

How many of you used to participate in rollerskating when you were a child? How many of you go out and skate today? Back in the 80’s it was a very popular activity but now a days, it seems to have fallen by the wayside. At least around here.

I used to roller skate all the time as a teen. I go skating now and again still. I love the exhilaration and the workout.

I used to rollerskate when I was a child. I have not done it in years, but I like the idea of starting again.

I used to go rollerskating all the time when I was a teen. Looks like everyone had a great time! I don’t think they have a skating rink in the area where we live.

Roller-skating was a big thing to do when I was young – in the 70s. My girls went all of the time as they were growing up in the 80s & 90s. Its too bad so many rinks have closed down.

  5. Our much loved roller skating rink closed about 2 years ago. It had been in the same location for 30+ years and all the school parties were held there. Now the nearest one is about 20 miles away.

  6. What a fun time! I’ve never been rollerskating, but it looks really neat :]

We did go skating in my youth. It was so much fun. I really wasn’t that good. I was just good enough not to fall down. We have a skating rink here but it is 30 miles away on the other side of the county.

Ha! Igrew up roller skating and that was a bit before the 80s! I remember doing the 2 step on the floor, doing this thing called the whip where we would fling each other. I still remember the song they played at the end of the night. Those were the days. It’s nice seeing your family had a good time, youre going to have to get healed up and get that groove on too!

  9. We did a lot of rollerskating when I was growing up in the 1950s. Our rink even gave free passes to kids who had ‘A’s on their report cards. (I got to skate for free pretty often)

  10. I used to go rollerskating all the time in the 80’s. Boy, the last time I went must have been like 15 years ago. They closed the local rink here but I think there still is one in a nearby town. I think it is great for kids. The pictures that you posted reminded me of fun times.
