Cooking with Kids: Banana S’mores in a Jar Recipe

Banana S'mores in a Jar RecipeMy granddaughter is 8 1/2 years old and has been helping me out in the kitchen since the age of 4. When we cook and bake together we’re spending quality time with one another and she’s learning important life skills. As an added bonus, we get to eat something good!

As part of our Cooking with Kids feature here on the blog, I’m sharing with you the latest recipes that the Princess and I made together. The recipe is from the following cookbook:

Title: 150 Best Meals in a Jar
Author: Tanya Linton
ISBN: 978-0-7788-0528-1
Publisher: Robert Rose Books
Note: Page 184 in the Desserts Section

Tips from Shelly: This dessert is made in the microwave. The mason jars will be hot. Please have an adult assist with the recipe and for the adult to handle the hot glass mason jars until they’ve cooled. In addition, you can add or subtract your favorite ingredients. We’ve made the recipe a few times now and at times we’ve added less of the chocolate chips and more of the mini marshmallows. You can play around with the ingredients to get them the way that you like them. Plus, you can assemble the ingredients into the glass mason jar 2 days ahead of time and refrigerate them, until needed. YUMMY GOOD!

Banana S’mores in a Jar Recipe

8 oz. Glass Mason Jar
1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 tsp. unsalted butter, melted
1/2 banana, sliced
1/4 cup miniature marshmallows
1 Tbsp. chocolate chips (we used semi-sweet)

In a small bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs with the melted butter. Press graham cracker mixture firmly into the bottom of the glass jar. Layer the sliced banana, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips on top. Seal jar and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

When read to serve them, remove the lid and microwave on HIGH in 15-second intervals until melted and bubbling. Carefully remove the hot jar from the microwave and let it cool for a couple of minutes before serving.
