Visiting Niagara Falls State Park at Night

Niagara Falls in New York at NightNiagara Falls is one of the oldest state parks in the country and luckily for us, it’s open year-round. With that said, I think the best time to visit the park is in late spring and early fall…the weather is just perfect then!

Back in late spring of 2017 we had the pleasure of visiting Niagara Falls again and this time we made a point to visit during the evening hours. We’ve seen the falls at night before, but never spent a considerable amount of time in the park after dark.

Niagara Falls at Night

Once dusk arrives, they turn on colorful lights on the Canadian side of the falls and point them directly onto the falls for visitor’s to see. This evening light show really draws the visitors, so you’ll want to arrive early to grab the perfect spot.

When we were there…the daytime weather was perfect, but during the evening hours it got really windy with 40 mph winds. That means, that as you stand on the observation desk, you got a little wet from the mist in the air blowing around. If you took one of the Maid of the Mist boat tours, you got even wetter thanks to the wind!

Maid of the Mist - Niagara Falls

On that particular evening, we did go out on the Maid of the Mist, so that we could view the bottom of the falls and get a good look at Horseshoe Falls at night. The Maid of the Mist has 2 boarding docks, one on the American side and one on the Canadian side and boat tours leave approximately every 15-20 minutes. Your entire boat ride on Maid of the Mist lasts for about 20 minutes and we highly recommend it!

The Niagara Falls photographs in this travel feature were taken in late spring of 2017. I had to really protect my camera from all of the mist & water flying around and since it was dusk…my camera flash wanted to go nuts. Even though a tad-grainy, I think you can get a good idea of what Niagara Falls looks like at night!

city lights of Niagara Falls Canada

In the photograph above, you can see the city lights of Niagara Falls Canada all lit up at night, which is really pretty to see. The majority of those skyscrapers are hotels, resorts, expensive restaurants and casino’s, that dot the coastline on the Canadian side. If you look closely, you can see all of that wet mist that was flying around which got us a little wet and why I was protecting my camera!

We had a really great time on that particular trip and are looking forward to returning again next year and bringing along our family. If you ever get to visit Niagara Falls State Park, make sure you spend a good amount of time over there during the daytime hours and then go back again at night! It’s a totally different experience!

  1. I was born in Canada and moved to Florida when I was 9 years old. These photos bring back memories of when I visited Niagra Falls when I was a little girl. That is so awesome that you took a boat.

This looks so beautiful . I would love to visit both during the morning and night time. Right now I would not go since it is so cold it might freeze up the falls!

  3. This looks so beautiful. I could see how you would want to see it at night. The lights make it almost magical. Ididnt know their bota would go during the night, I also didnt know it was 20 minuets, I would want to look longer no matter how wet I got. One day I will see this, until then thank you for sharing it with us!

I visited Niagara Falls in the winter and it was gorgeous. We just happened to be up that way buying a dog from a breeder and dediced to stop by. My husband had never been. Only trouble is the mist turns to ice so you can get pelted.
