5 Ways That Women Can Learn Self-Defense

5 Ways That Women Can Learn Self-DefenseIn this day and age, crime can happen anytime. Even with the advancement of technology and civilization, there’s no denying that there are still some people who take pleasure in inflicting pain and suffering on others.

For women, learning self-defense can help them not only to protect themselves but to also empower other women around them. While learning self-defense is a way for women to protect themselves, you can say that it is also their way of assuring their loved ones that they are doing their best to stay safe and be available to them in the future.

If you’re thinking that you want to learn self.-defense, here are the various ways you can get the skill needed.

1. Be aware of your surroundings – regardless of how well you know self-defense, it would still be hard to practice the moves that you have learned if you are suddenly caught unaware. It’s important you be vigilant and always check your surroundings. This is especially true if you find yourself traveling alone in an area that does not have a lot of foot traffic. If you are not yet very sure of your skills in self-defense, bring with you some pepper spray or a rape whistle. Aside from that, always make sure that you inform someone, whether family or friend, of where you are, where you are going and who you are traveling with.

2. Ask help from friends – maybe you have friends that can teach you some basic self-defense skills. This way, if you don’t have the extra cash to spare you will still be able to start learning the skill. Maybe you have a friend who is a police officer, or instructor, or someone who just took classes, don’t be afraid to ask them for advice. The moves you learn at first do not have to be complicated. Learning a simple defense move can make a great difference.

3. Look for videos on YouTube – while there are many videos on YouTube that are just for entertainment, there are those that can be used to educate many people on a broad variety of topics such as language, math and yes even self-defense skills. Check out the basic ones at first so you can slowly progress in your journey.

4. Buy a book or DVD that can teach you – there are also many books and DVDs that can teach about the many self-defense moves you can make. Check out what you think is perfect for you. Consider just how fit you are so you will know if you are able to take on the more advanced moves.

5. Enroll in a martial arts class – if you are the type who learns more when studying in a group, enrolling in a group class is the best choice. If you are not sure about the type of martial arts you can learn, why not try Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This is a great sport to learn because as you progress in your skills, you’ll even learn how to defeat opponents that are bigger and stronger than you. Check out Baltimore martial arts for more information on this sport that has been gaining popularity in the past years, not only in competitive sports but even in the art of self-defense.

These are all good suggestions. Women and children have to be more aware of their surroundings. It is important to learn self defense.

  2. Such good suggestions especially being aware of surroundings and having a whistle or pepper spray. It is too bad that we have to think about these things but it is an unfortunate reality.

  3. Great tips. I honestly think the biggest one is just staying aware and alert. Nowdays so many are looking down at their phones and not really paying attention- easy targets. That small distraction could be the difference between being a target or not. If someone with ill intent sees a person so unaware , they know they can ‘grab and go’ I have seen it done.

  4. These are all such good suggestions. It is sad that we have to be so prepared in these times and days but it has turned out to reality. I have not thought of using youtube. Thanks.
