Mini Tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield

Gettysburg Battlefield - Gettysburg National Military Park in PennsylvaniaWe’re pretty lucky that we live within a one hour drive of the historic and famous Gettysburg Battlefield and Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania.

Over the past year I’ve featured many different travel posts & features here on The Classy Chics blog featuring Gettysburg and today, I’m back with a few more photos!

Gettysburg Battlefield - Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania

The Gettysburg Battlefield is known for being a major battle and changing point during the Civil War. Matter of fact, President Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address at Solider’s National Cemetery which is within walking distance of the battlefield.

Over the past year we’ve visited the area four times and absolutely love taking day trips & weekend getaways down to Gettysburg. It has some of the prettiest scenery in the entire state of Pennsylvania. There are a ton of different activities for couples and families to enjoy.

The photographs that I’m featuring today are ones that we took during our February 2017 trip. Luckily, we had a lot of mild weather this past winter and it was really nice to spend some time outdoors walking around the battlefield and checking out the monuments.

When you come across a monument, the majority of them have educational & informational plaques in front of them or near them. Please take the time to read them, as you’ll learn a LOT about the Civil War that you’ll never find in your basic history books.

The Gettysburg Battlefield is pretty large. Some of the tour you’ll need to take by car, horse or by auto-tour with a guide. There are some portions along the way where you can park, get out and walk around. It’s a really nice walk and a lot of it has paved roads, so if you’re handicapped, you can experience it too.

Within walking distance of the parking lot off Steinwehr Avenue you can walk to a large portion of the Gettysburg Battlefield, walk to Soldier’s National Cemetery, visit the Lincoln Train Museum, the Gettysburg Heritage Center & Museum and several hotels & motels are located nearby. Heck, you’ll find a few good restaurants in that particular area where you can grab lunch & dinner too.

My husband and I spent 3 days in Gettysburg during that particular trip and we still didn’t get to everything on our to-do list. With that said, we really enjoyed visiting the National Military Park Museum, the Gettysburg Cyclorama and of course…the battlefield.

Here’s just a few tips if you’re planning to do the Gettysburg Battlefield Tour: 1. Wear comfortable walking shoes! You’ll be doing a lot of walking! 2. Try to visit during good weather days when it’s not too cold, nor too hot outside. 3. Pack yourself a lunch, a few beverages & snacks to munch on throughout the day. 4. Stop by the Gettysburg National Military Park or one of the tourist information centers to pick up a free map. These maps show you all of the suggested routes & will show you where a lot of the monuments are!

Well, there you have it! Another post for our weekly travel feature here on The Classy Chics blog. I hope you all have been enjoying them!

I love history and we toured a number of battlefields but never this one. We just didnt go this far north. Most people dont realize the actual size of the battlefields, and the carnage that spread for miles around it. I would love to see this one because not only was there history made with the battle but also Lincolns address.

A few years ago my husband and I spent a whole day – sunrise to sunset – walking around Gettysburg. I hadn’t been since I was in elementary school, and the history and pain just soaked into my heart. Gettysburg is a MUST-SEE for every American!
