The summer grilling season is finally here and today I’m sharing a recipe that I got from another family member last month. My son is the expert grill-chef in the family and this is one of his favorite barbecue sauce recipes to use. When we whip up this barbecue sauce, we like to slather it thickly onto some nice chicken thighs, breasts or wings.
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3 cups cola flavored soft drink
- 1 1/2 cups ketchup
- 1/4 cup cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- In a large saucepan combine together the first 10 ingredients and simmer over medium heat, stirring often for 8-10 minutes. The mixture should thicken up. Once it’s hot and thickened, stir in the lemon juice and simmer for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
- You can use the sauce immediately to baste the chicken that you’re tossing onto a hot grill. If you’re not ready to use it, let it cool for 15 minutes and then place it into a container with lid. Refrigerate the sauce until ready to use. It should keep 2-3 days in the refrigerator.
There have been times where we’ve substituted the cola with a Dr. Pepper-type of soft drink and it came out equally as delicious! Try this sauce on chicken, pork chops and/or steak.
If you like a spicier type of barbecue sauce, you can add in more hot sauce and garlic powder to give it additional heat. Tummy issues? You can decrease those specific ingredients. You can really tailor this recipe to suit your own taste buds.

I like the idea of using a soda to sweeten the recipe and I also think that the carbonation helps in the marination of different meats..
I’ll have to make a trip to the store for the cola since I don’t drink it any more. But the recipe sounds yummy.
We are having the perfect weather to be outside and enjoying the grill. I like the look of this sauce especially for chicken wings. Looks fabulous.
I have made this before it really is quite good. I like a sweeter BBQ sauce so it really works for me. I think the cola is great. Another variation is to use Dr Pepper and I have even seen people using 7Up. It gives a nice flavor.
With BBQ sauce this simple to make and so full of good flavors, why do I buy the pre-made kind? Thanks for sharing your recipe–it certainly looks like a winner, and I’ll be trying it soon.
I will cut down the recipe since it’s just for me and I can’t eat it all in three days, but it looks great. It’s low carb too if you use the sugar sub colas. I used to love Dr Pepper and would be curious to taste a sauce with it as a base.
Sounds like my style of BBQ Sauce. I can’t wait to try it. Thank You for sharing this delicious sounding BBQ sauce.I’m going to pin it now~~ Have a Great Day :O)~~~
This made me hungry just reading the recipe. I really want to try this one out this summer thank you for sharing this recipe I had not seen it before.
