Gardening: How to Turn Wood Pallets into Strawberry Growing Planters

Gardening: How to Turn Wood Pallets into Strawberry PlantersTwo years ago we decided to put a pool into our small backyard and since that time, we don’t regret it. With that said, we did have to make the decision to give up some of our gardening space to accommodate it. Even though we lost horizontal garden space, we gained vertical space by planting some of our fruits & veggies in grow boxes and containers.

While on Pinterest one day, Hubby saw several pins/images on how to make your own strawberry growing boxes out of wood pallets. He gets a LOT of wood pallets (for free) at work and he’s always making something out of them. Just last Fall, he made me several nice pieces of holiday yard art which I adore!

Since I don’t believe in “ripping off” other Pinterest user’s images and ideas…I won’t give you the specific How-To’s in this post. Yes, I know bloggers do that all of the time, but I don’t believe in ripping off someone else’s creative idea and hard work! Instead, I’ll link to the page on Pinterest that is full of ideas and how-to’s on how to make your own. Some of them vary a little bit from one another.

Sam decided to keep our strawberry grow boxes pretty simple. In one afternoon, he had two of them completely built from start to finish. We decided to not paint our’s and for now, we’ve left them plain. I really like the rustic look myself.

We purchased two packages (each package has a dozen strawberry plants) from a local nursery and followed the decorations on the package for planting them. Once he had them in the two grow boxes, we gave them a good watering. You’ll want to read the instructions that come with your plants and follow them, so that you’ll have growing success.

Once our gardening growing season moves along, I’ll come back and update this post to show you how our strawberry garden turned out. In the meantime, I wanted to get this post up, since our strawberry growing season here in the northeast is a lot shorter than other areas around the country. Enjoy!

This is a great way to recycle pallets. I would love to grow strawberries, but I am not sure that there is enough sun on our balcony.

  2. I always see wood pallets for free but never knew they could be used for such a great project. I have a bunch of strawberry plants in my yard and they already have berries that are beginning to ripen. Raspberries are dong well also.

Container Plants grow the Best for me. I seem to tend to them better then going out in the yard on the ground trying to take care of them in a Garden. Never thought of using Pallets for growing strawberies. Might just have to try it this year! Strawberries and Tomatoes are my Favorite. Thank you for sharing this awesome idea. 🙂

This would be a great use for old pallets. I see so many ways to use them online & some are tips for using old pallets as furniture in the home & I always want to holler, lol, because having lived right next to a company that used those pallets, I know they spray them with all sorts of insecticides & chemicals to preserve them. Now, as long as you’re using them outside like this, no problem. But if you want to use pallets for indoor projects, please get new ones. You can buy new ones pretty cheaply at places like Lowes or Home Depot.

I can’t believe we just burnt our old pallets in a bonfire. We had a stack of them from pellets used this past winter. Next year!

  6. I’d love to grow strawberries but I don’t even step out onto my smoggy balcony. It reminds me of the Strawberry Festival coming up though, about an hour away, but worth it if you love all things strawberry (in Oxnard, CA). What a great way to upcycle the pallets. I love the rustic look but don’t think I could resist not decorating them in some way!

My husband is the pallet king. No kidding, right now he is taling apart pallets that granite is shipped on. Yes, he is a mess. If your husband wants to be impressed, my hubby knows where to get pallets 18’x22′ size. These babies weigh in at over 400 pounds and have the most beautiful wood. He has used it for all kinds of stuff.
I might have to try the verticl strawberry growing . My beds are out of control, and hubby says we never get any the squirrels do first. He is actually right- I use strawberries as bait and by the time the garden plants are up the animals dont want them. Strawberries put off so many runners, I could grab a few of those and try it.

It is hard to believe how many uses there are for pallets to day! Years ago our shipping department could not get people to take them. Some of our local stores put there pallets out for people to take and they are gone ASAP.
