Why a Homemaker Should Learn Sewing?

Why a Homemaker Should Learn Sewing?Like any other productive hobby, sewing is also a very creative practice to include in your hobbies. Earlier, when we had no designers and the culture of sewing was not spread across the world, it was quite difficult to get things done. Then slowly, this art was brought in daily practice, and it became a part of a women’s hobby. Anyone who knew sewing was considered as talented. And, trust me, sewing is not just a hobby, it is an art that empowers you in different ways. These days, we are surrounded by service providers, but are they reliable enough?

Let’s just take an example! Suppose you have no idea about the basics of thread and needle. And, you see a small disorder in your cloth which needs to be fixed. Well! In this case, all you can do is either drop that cloth for a particular day or immediately rush to tailor or designer to get it fixed. Had you known sewing, it would have been a matter of two minutes for you. But, this simple process was exaggerated just because of a small drawback. Now, this was an eye opener for all the ladies, especially homemakers, who are too busy to realize the benefits of sewing.

Even now, there are many women who are not so impressed with my storytelling skills. The time you will spend in finding the right fabric, choosing the design, and doing preparations to sew your desired stuff, you can simply go to boutique and purchase it for you. As I already mentioned, this is not just a hobby or skill, this is an art. It not only gives you a stylish outfit, but also the memories to cherish. It can be the best thing to keep you occupied when you simply go for binge eating or watch daily soaps. Instead of just chit chatting and whining over several issues, you can relax your mind by doing something productive. This is why every homemaker should learn the art of sewing.

If you are obsessed with fashion, you can become a pro in this skill. The moment you take up the tutorials, innumerable creative ideas will occupy your mind that will compel you to create wonders with fabric. In this way, you not only learn to curate a completely new dress, but you also get to learn the tricks to recycle your old ones. You can make shrugs out of scarves, casual bag from t-shirts and old jeans and what not. I have seen people transforming their old cloths into a new trendy one, and it makes me admire the talent they are blessed with. The moment you start sewing your own cloths and the moment you start trying creative things with fabric, your work will get noticed by the people around you. At least once in while you will receive a compliment and they will ask you about the shop from which you got them. Why waste time, when you can be this creative?

Little did you know that sewing can be the best stress buster? It is engaging, it will relax your mind, and you get overwhelmed to see the outcome. There are many steps in sewing tutorials like basic, advanced, specialist, and much more. Once you know the basics, you can go for other levels and this will boost your self-confidence to do something productive with your spare time. It is the best therapy to do away with your inferiority complex. Sounds abhorrent, but homemakers actually feel that they are not meant to fit into a profession. They do not realize that homemaking itself is a commendable job, and not everyone can successfully accomplish it. But in case you feel low about yourself, then this is the right thing to learn and start your wonderful journey with fabrics.

If you are facing a crunch and you want to support your significant other, then this is undoubtedly the best thing to start. If you already know stitching, you can learn some advanced techniques and start your business. The best part about taking this up as profession is that, you do not need any marketing. Your business will go viral within few days of starting it and you will be surrounded by customers in no time. Although it will not fetch you a heavy money bag but slowly you can earn enough to support your livelihood. Beyond the shadow of any doubt, every homemaker should at least learn the basics of sewing. Be it a phase of recession or depression, your sewing skills will be your best companion. You can also pass it on to other interested people and make them skilled enough. Hence, there is no need for you to sit back and over think about anything. Just get yourself engaged with sewing machine and produce dreamy pieces to wear.

I learned to sew years ago. I have not sewed in a long time, but I recently bought a new sewing machine and am considering starting again. First I would repair some of my clothes and then consider making items.

  2. I remember Mom’s old black Singer sewing machine but really learned from my 4-H sewing projects. I don’t sew as much as I used to but in the past sewed two wedding dresses, made of satin and lace. I still have them and both are tea length, so thinking of modifying them to wear again. Perhaps dye the lace– I haven’t decided yet but have seen some really cool upcycling projects on the internet. I like quilting as well and have all the tools for it so should get back into it.

  3. I learned to sew when I was a child and then I also took it in school as an elective class. I doubt they even teach it in school anymore. I really think it is important for women and men too to know how to sew. The older I get the more I appreciate sewing and things that are handmade. Thank you for sharing this one.

I can do the basics with clothing but I have been a quilter for many years. I can make repairs to clothing, even darn socks, but it isnt a passion. For many it is, but I have never been a fashionista. There is a thrill in quilting though.. heirlooms are made along with functional pieces. I agree this is a craft that should be learned!
