Black Cat and Bumble Bee Rock Painting Craft Projects

Twice a month we try to feature a crafting with kids project here on Two Classy Chics blog and we’re ready with our next installment. Even though this project is geared towards children, adults can make them too! Matter of fact, adults who have some painting experience can really make some beautifully details garden rocks!

We would like to thank our sponsor Sharpie for sending us a few packs of their wonderful markers! In combination with acrylic paints, you can do an entire barnyard or forest of animals for your yard. Let’s get started.

Black Cat Painted Garden Rock

Smooth River Rocks
Black Acrylic Paint
Silver Metallic Sharpie Marker
Pink Sharpie Marker
Paint Brush
Water Bowl and Paper Towels
Newspaper
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer

Lay newspaper down on your work surface. Have the kids paint their rocks with black acrylic paint. We painted one side, waited an hour, flipped it over and painted the other side. You want to make sure your painted rock is completely dry before moving on to adding the details.

Use the Sharpie Silver Metallic Marker to draw on your cat’s features. Sharpie’s dry really quickly (in only a few seconds) and they’re easier for children to use when it comes to adding the animal’s details. Use a pink Sharpie Marker to add the cat’s nose and to dot the inside of the cat’s ears.

Once everything is dry, take the rock outside and lay it down onto newspaper. Have an adult spray the front side of the rock lightly with clear acrylic spray sealer. Let it dry for a few hours, flip it over and lightly spray the other side. Once it’s completely dry, they are safe for you to display outside.

Bumble Bee Painted Rock

Smooth River Rocks
Bright Yellow and White Acrylic Paint
Black Sharpie Marker – Medium Point
Paint Brush
Water Dish and Paper Towel
Newspaper
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer
Wooden Toothpick

Lay newspaper down onto your work surface. Have the kids paint the entire rock in a bright yellow color using acrylic paint. Once the yellow paint has thoroughly dried, use the black medium point Sharpie Marker to draw (paint on) the bumble bee’s stripes.

Dip the end of a paint brush into white acrylic paint and dot on two circular eyes. Dip a wooden toothpick into the white acrylic paint and dot on the antenna. Once the white paint has dried, use the black Sharpie Marker to dot the center of each eye and to add a mouth. Let dry.

Last year we featured our Lady Bug Garden Rocks right here on the blog. You can find the Lady Bug Garden Rocks craft project and make those while you’re making these too!

Sharpie Marker Variety Pack

We always keep a great supply of Sharpie markers on-hand as they’re great “painting” tools for older children. We received a complimentary set of the new Sharpie Fine Tip Permanent Markers which contains 12 markers in a variety of colors.

One of the reasons we love Sharpie is that their markers feature quick-drying, fade-resistant and water-resistant inks. These days you can find them in a wide array of beautiful colors to go along with all of your different projects and they work on most surfaces! You can visit Sharpie online to learn more about their products and to pick up some free craft project ideas.

I love this craft . I remember the ladybug from a previous post and the black cat and bumble bee are just a attractive. I am sure al lkids as well as many adults would love doing these painted rocks.

  3. We used the Ladybug craft as a birthday party craft for my granddaughter when she was younger and it was a hit with all the kids. We will have to add the bumble bee and black cat to the collection. Fun to use as decorations near our outdoor planters.

  4. I think the hardest part would be finding the right rocks. I’d love to make the black cat for my friend’s garden.

I really like this idea. I could see using red to create a ladybug, too. This would be a great craft for kids to help with.

    • I updated the post with a photo and link to our post last year on making the ladybugs! We’ve got 4 more animals to feature with one being a tropical fish.

I LOVE this. I have been meaning to ask my niece to make some of these for my garden. I like how easy they look to do. I also like how we could spend a day together finding ‘perfect’ rocks!
