Craft Project: Easter Bunny from Old Socks

Easter is just around the corner and we’ve kicked our spring and Easter crafting into high gear. Last week we whipped up several of these sock bunnies which were really easy-to-make. If you’ve got some old socks around the house, you can put them to good use with this craft project.

Before we get started, you’ll want to pick out some white socks that don’t have any holes. It’s okay if they have stains, because you’re going to tea-dye them which will be explained below.

Craft Project: Easter Bunny from Old Socks

Old White Cotton Socks
Tea Bags, Hot Water, Container & Tons
1/8 to 1/4 yard Cotton Homespun Fabric
Fiberfill Stuffing
1/8″ Diameter Black Round Beads
1/8″ Diameter Pink Pom-Pom
1/2″ Diameter Wood Heart – Painted Dark Mauve
Scissors
Sewing Thread & Needle
All-Purpose Craft Glue

Place 2-3 tea bags into a pan of boiling water and boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour tea water undiluted into a small container and place cotton socks inside. Let socks sit in the water for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove socks, wring out the excess tea back into the container or into the sink. Toss socks into the dryer and dry. They should now be tea-dyed!

Take one sock and cut the leg portion of the sock into half using scissors. Stuff the foot portion of the sock with fiberfill stuffing. Once stuffed, tie the head opening close with string, ribbon or a rubber band. To make the ears, you can hand sew or machine sew the ears together. They are the leg portion of the sock that you cut into half.

Take a needle and thread and sew on the two black beads to form the eyes and use all-purpose glue to glue on the tiny pink pom-pom for the nose. Glue the wooden heart as shown in the photograph. Cut strips from the cotton homespun fabric. Tie one strip around the bunny’s neck to form the scarf and the second one around the base of the ears to form a bow. The size of your strips will depend on the size of the socks that you used.

Note: Adult-size socks will make bigger bunnies and if you use children’s socks, they will make smaller ones. There are basically no measurements or pattern. You can alter them and decorate them anyway that you like. We try to use buttons, beads and scraps of fabric that we already have on hand. If you want to make the ears posable, add wire in them before you sew them up. For girl bunnies, add a little bit of blusher to the bunny’s cheeks.

You can do all kinds of things to them to personalize them. Have fun, you can make an entire family of rabbits!

What a cute craft! I have to look in my pile of misfit socks and see if I have any volunteers.

This is a pretty neat idea. Even younger kids could help enough with this project, so they feel they’ve made the bunny.

  5. I want to use fuzzy socks so the bunny will be fuzzy. Cute craft, thanks.

  6. I have never heard of this craft before but I sure looks super cute and we have some old socks that would be perfect for this one. I can’t believe Easter is just around the corner boy time is flying by. Thank you for sharing this cute idea.
