Birdwatching – The Beautiful Birds at the Jersey Shore

Birdwatching - The Beautiful Birds at the ShoreHow many of you enjoy birdwatching? I admit, I do! Every time we travel, especially down to the shore…I’m always on the lookout for birds. I think some of the prettiest birds in the world live along the coast or in tropical locations. I really enjoy spending time on the beach and spying on the shore birds who live there.

When we travel I like to take along 2 pairs of binoculars, a bird identification guide, pen and my camera. I like to document the various type’s of birds that we see, when and where. It’s fun to look back over the years to see what we spotted on one of our many journeys.

Birdwatching - The Beautiful Birds at the Shore

These photos that I took (not professionally taken photos) are some of the birds that we spotted on our last trip down to the Jersey Shore. These beautiful animals were spotted in North Wildwood…the tip of the island near the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and right on the North Wildwood Seawall. It’s a great place to spot Egrets and Cranes!

We find that the best time to spot them is during the morning hours or during the evening hours when the majority of people are off the beach. It also seems to be PRIME TIME feeding time for them. I’ve noticed that when the tide is going out or during low tide also seem to be great times to see them.

A few tips: Never toss food to wild birds! They must remain wild and they don’t need to be dependent on humans to feed them. Next, don’t let the kids or pets chase them! Keep your distance and view them from afar, hence the need for binoculars and if they want to come up close to you…they will.

How many of you enjoy birdwatching? For those of you who do enjoy this hobby, how often do you get out there in nature to watch them?

My husband really enjoys bird watchiing now. When he was really needing too stay inactiive, he got a pair of binoculars and a bird book. He has always fed the birds, but now he knows when some unusual or rare ones come to feed. He feeds them from the second story where there arent any predators. We also both love watching the loons and the wild birds!

I enjoy your photos and would probably enjoy bird watching. Now that I have more time I may start doing this and a few other hobbies.

  5. I live by a small lake that is home to several kinds of birds. I like the herons that come to visit.

  6. Beautiful pictures of that beautiful egret. I learned to love birds from my mother, who always had time to stop whatever she was doing if there was a pretty bird nearby. In her later years, when she was ill and living with us, I made sure there was a bird feeder right outside her window so she could always enjoy her birds. Now I even have a spotting scope by my window, so I can keep an eye on the waterfowl on the bay.
