Kid’s Craft Project: Iguana Paper Plates

Kid's Craft Project: Iguana Paper PlateFor the past few months my grandchildren have been cooped up thanks to the nasty & cold winter weather. When its too cold outside to go out and play, I try to keep them busy indoors with various arts & craft projects.

Today’s kid’s craft project is a super-easy one and its appropriate for both little boys and girls. In addition, you probably have all of the supplies on-hand. We made this craft with an 8 year old boy and a 7 year old girl. Just giving you ages, so you know which age group it would be appropriate for.

Tip: Look up information about Iguanas from the internet and print out some photos and facts. Using this arts & crafts time to educate the little one’s on Iguanas and which country they hail from. Supplies list is “per project”. Not fond of Iguana’s? You can make it in a lizard theme.

Pattern: You can find hundreds of FREE Iguana and Lizard templates online. Let the child decide if they want to make a lizard or an iguana or let them “hand draw” their own pattern. If you’re looking for a lizard one, you can find one HERE.

Kid’s Craft Project: Iguana Paper Plates

2 White Paper Plates
1 Metal Brad
1 Box of Markers
1 Wiggle Eye
Scissors
Paper Pattern
Pencil

Have the child hand-draw or trace an image of an Iguana or Lizard onto the front of one white paper plate. Use scissors to cut out the image on the traced line. Set aside.

Using different colored markers, have the child scribble colors onto the second white paper plate or have them draw & color their own picture. Stress to the child that they will need to use thick lines and areas, so that they get good coverage on the paper plate with the colors. See our example below.

Once the marker ink is dry, layer paper plate number one onto paper plate number two and fasten them together in the center with a metal brad. Apply one wiggle eye onto the top paper plate (self-adhesive) or use a tiny dot of white craft glue. That’s it, you’re done!

Kid’s can spin the top plate around and their Iguana or Lizard will change colors depending on where the “cut-out” area lands on the bottom paper plate.

I like how colorful this craft is. You can use the shape of any animal or even a plant. It could become a great teaching moment.

This is a cool idea, I no longer do crafts …. hand problems but my niece is doing them with her kids. Going to pass this along to her.

That’s pretty neat. I love the bright colors (I could see doing brightly-colored birds, too.)

    • You could make them with just about any animal shape. We’ve done them before with a tropical angel fish pattern too. I like to use them as teaching moments and teach my granddaughter & godson about the particular animal. Great for pre-school crafts & early childhood education.

  4. That is easy and fun and colorful. I like the center turning thing.

  6. I really like how colorful this is! I bet the kids enjoyed making it. This would make a great gift for an Aunt or a Grandmother. I love getting things like this from the kids!
