The Old Gettysburg Train Station

Gettysburg Train StationA few months ago my husband and I took a trip to Gettysburg Pennsylvania, so that we could learn more about the Civil War and to check out some of the Gettysburg tourist attractions.

One place that we got to visit was the old Gettysburg Train Station that is located one block from Lincoln Square on Carlisle Street. This train station was important to the area because it allowed people to travel back & forth from Gettysburg to Hanover in Pennsylvania.

During the Civil War it served as an impromptu field hospital for the injured & dying soldiers. The townspeople tried their best to nurse the wounded back to health. Of course medicine is much more advanced today than what it was back then.

The building is a historical building because President Lincoln arrived at the Gettysburg Train Station the day before he delivered his famous Gettysburg Address. He also left the train station the day after his speech and headed back to Washington D.C.

This train station is FREE to visit and open to the public for free tours. It gives you the history of the railroad station, some history about the people who lived in the city and President Lincoln’s role in making it world famous.

One of the things I learned during the tour is that back then women and men couldn’t sit together while waiting for their train to arrive! Can you believe that? Geesh, I’m so glad that times have changed and now women have equal rights!

As you walk through the train station you’ll see some exhibits & displays in miniature which show you want the station looked like back in the late 1883 before, during and after the Civil War. The photo shows an old wooden bench that was in the original station over 100+ years ago.

We had a great time on our little trip and we’re already planning another trip back to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing with you some more photos from our trip and I hope you enjoy learning more about this really special city here in my home state!

I love historical sites like this that might otherwise be overlooked. It’s great that they’ve preserved it.
