The Ship’s Rusty Anchor

Rusty Ship Anchor in WildwoodWhen traveling, I like to look around for the more obscure things to see while all of the tourists flock to the main attractions. For me, those little things are more interesting than the big things.

For example, while on vacation we were walking along the beach and sand dunes and came across a playground that was built directly on the beach. It’s a beautiful playground with a lot of fun things for the kids to see and do. There are plenty of benches for the parents to sit down & relax while their children play.

A little further down and off-the-beaten path we found this really large rusty & old ship’s anchor leaning up against a wood piling. We sat there looking at it and were really surprised at how large it was and trust me, it’s so heavy we couldn’t even budge it. None of the tourists nearby even noticed it and they all just walked right by it like it was no big deal.

Can you imagine the size of ship that the rusty anchor used to belong to? That anchor is at least 5 feet tall, if not taller! It’s pretty wide too…I would say about 4 1/2 foot wide. It’s actually quite beautiful (even in it’s rusty state which gives it charm) to see.

So a piece of advice to all of you. When you travel, take the time to look for the obscure & smaller things that aren’t attracting the tourists. You can really find some hidden gems along your way. Over the next few weeks, I’ll share a few other obscure treasures that we found on one of our recent trips down to the Jersey Shore.

  1. I like looking for and seeking out the odd and unusual when I go places. (even in my own town). ‘Along the way, don’t forget to smell the flowers.’

I agree that you have to keep your eyes open and try to see beyond the tourist items. I would always walk down the back streets to see what I could find. I too would have enjoyed finding this very large anchor.

  3. That’s about as symbolic of the seashore as it gets! So much history there, as well as rustic beauty. I’m glad you were there to appreciate it and to share your photo with us.

  4. I can’t imagine how big that ship was for that size of an anchor. You really have a great eye to spot this. I think this would make a really pretty painting maybe in water colors.

That is a huge anchor! I agree, you find the neatest things off the beaten path.

So So True! Several years ago my sister I met in Boston to spend a week just running around. After we left boston on the back roads we saw a camping ground. We decided we wanted to visit the Yogi Bear camp ground. We talked the guard into letting us in. It was wonderful we had so much fun there.

  7. This is pretty! yes, an old rusty anchor. It may not have been that big of a boat, we used to put out more than one anchor, and they were pretty big and heavy, with a strong wind, an anchor not quite sufficient can drag!
