3 Days, 6 Days and 9 Days Old Baby Bird Photos

Baby Birds 3 Days Old

Baby Birds 3 Days Old

How many of you enjoy bird watching? My husband and I are both avid bird watchers and were pretty excited when a house finch decided to make a nest in one of my hanging baskets on my front porch.

About 2 weeks after she set up “house” in my flower basket we noticed she was being extremely protective and aggressive if anyone walked towards that end of my porch. We caught her leaving the nest to go look for food and took a peek inside. Yup, you guessed it…3 day old baby birds!

It’s amazing at how naked those babies are when they are first born and how quickly they grow. The first photo in this post shows them at 3 days of age.

A few days later we caught momma bird leaving the nest again and quietly went to take a peek. Oh my gosh…those little cuties sure did grow a lot in three days! The photo above shows them at 6 days old. You can see a lot of their down and some of their feathers now coming in.

Baby Birds 9 Days Old

Fast forward another 3 days and we are now at age 9 days. We got another sneak peek at those darling baby birds and the photo above shows what they looked like at 9 days old! Now you see very little bald spots and their feathers are really coming in now. They’ve also doubled their size!

I went out to take a peek at them on day 13 but guess what? They must of just fledged the nest and were gone! I did some research online and learned that a lot of birds fledge their nests around 14 days, so these cuties apparently were right on schedule.

Aww, that is so cool! I had no idea they left the nest so soon!

  2. That is awesome! Well done with the photos. How lucky to have such pretty birds nesting on your porch–I love house finches. Actually, I love birds in general and am an avid birder and bird photographer. We’re lucky enough to have everything from song sparrows to eagles around here, and I love them all. Sometimes I have to discontinue feeding them, because a peregrine falcon or hawk comes round and regularly raids the doves and other regulars at my feeder. I know the raptors have to eat, too, but it really upsets me to actually watch it happen or to find piles of feathers. Anyway, thanks for sharing your sweet photos.

We have a lot of birds around here, and I sometimes watch them on the lawn, bushes or trees: Finches, blue jays robins, sparrows, cardinals and more. However, I am not really a bird watcher. I enjoyed seeing from your photos how quickly these birds grew.

  4. I am so loving watching these baby birds grow. Keep them safe mama.

  5. This is so precious. Cant believe the awesome photos you were able to get. I am also amazed at how quick the process is. Only 13 days and leaving the nest. I did not know it was so fast.

  6. Aww.. How cute! Our parakeets are having babies. They get big so fast.
