A few weeks ago my mother was visiting us and whipped up her famous Chex Muddy Buddies recipe and I just had to share the recipe with all of you today. She follows their traditional recipe on their web site but adds-in her own yummy twists like M&M’s candies and broken up small pretzel twists.
This is YUMMY good and everyone in our family just loves it! Here is the recipe for all of you to enjoy too!
- 3 cups of Rice Chex Cereal
- 3 cups of Corn Chex Cereal
- 3 cups of Chocolate Chex cereal
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter - 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup M&M’s candies
- 1/4 cup Pretzels (broken into pieces)
- In a large mixing bowl combine together all of the Chex cereals, the M&Ms candies and the broken small pretzels until combined; set aside.
- In a large microwaveable bowl melt together the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter until smooth. Do this on the high setting at 30 second intervals until smooth and done. Remove from microwave and stir in the vanilla until combined.
- Pour the chocolate mixture into the mixing bowl that contains the cereal. Use a large spoon and stir until everything is combined and the chocolate mixture is coating all of the goodies in the mixing bowl. Pour the confectioner’s sugar into the bowl and stir again until all ingredients are well combined and everything is coated in the confectioner’s sugar.
- Cover bowl. You can store in the refrigerator or at room temperature like we do.
Do you make this recipe? Do you make it the standard way or do you add-in your own yummy goodies to it? I would like to hear all about it!

Yum! I first found out about muddy buddies from my college roommate. Never had it with M&M’s though. Will have to try it.
How much peanut butter is in this recipe? I would probably use less confectionary sugar, but I would like to try this recipe.
This sounds pretty good. One of my go to snacks os cereal and Muddy Buddy and Puppy Chow are favorites for sure. I love the stuff and f I dont watch it will eat a whole bowl up myself!
As much as I love muddy buddies, I’ve never made my own. But thanks to your mother’s generosity in sharing her recipe, that might change soon. I really like the idea of adding pretzel pieces for a little bit of salty goodness. Thanks!
Chex muddy buddies with a delicious twist – mmm – I love the add ins – I didn’t think these could be even better – but this is a must do!
I love Chex Mix recipes! This one for Muddy Buddies is a great one. (I screwed one up last Christmas when I failed to melt the chocolate correctly. I wound up with clumps of chocolate…and everyone loved it because it had clumps of chocolate, lol.)
This looks good like to try this
I’ve never tried this. Too much sweet for me.
I have seen many Muddy Buddies recipes but I have not tried any of them yet, in fact I have never eaten Muddy Buddies. It certainly looks delicious, I can’t wait to give it a try. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
We love the Chex Mix Puppy Chow recipes, and I know the added addition of M&M’s will make it even better. This is great with the chocolate Chex, too. Yummy!!!
I saw muddy buddys at Walmart yestarday. Now I now what they are Thanks
