The art of Feng Shui has been in practice for over 3000 years in the far east reaches of China.. Today, many in the western culture have also been embracing the theories of Feng Shui. I am sure you have heard of it and are probably asking – what is it, really.
According to Wikipedia,
Feng shui is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing everyone with the surrounding environment. The term feng shui literally translates as “wind-water” in English…. Feng shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as physiognomy (observation of appearances through formulas and calculations). The feng shui practice discusses architecture in metaphoric terms of “invisible forces” that bind the universe, earth, and man together, known as qi.
The art of this system mainly deals with harmonizing and balancing your surroundings to keep the invisible forces around you flowing. This is not a religion nor is it based in a religion but rather a way of controlling the life forces in your home.
For many that use these practices, they find that simple tasks such as clearing clutter, placing their furniture in certain positions and even using the right colors and plants in their home have opened the doors to peace and energy. I know that when my home is clean and clutter free, my mind feels at peace.

Put Your Desk in Command
Your desk position is important in feng shui because it represents your career and path in life. The desk is best located such that you can see the door, while not directly in line with the door. This means your back is not facing the door. The most auspicious position is when the desk is positioned diagonally, “kitty corner,” away from the door while still facing the door.
This desired orientation is called the “command position”. This position minimizes stress and allows the best flow of energy while working. Metaphorically, if you can see the door, you are in command of your life, career and can see all the possible opportunities that are coming your way. If the command position is not possible, you can set up a mirror such that while you are sitting at your desk, you can still easily see the door in the reflection.
Plant in Prosperity Corner
Now that you have your desk situated in the command position, another powerful way to attract abundance in your career and work is to activate the Prosperity area. For the office, please stand in the doorway facing into the room. The area to the far left back is the Prosperity corner of your office. Alternatively, you can locate the Prosperity corner of your desktop. For the desktop, while sitting at your desk, the far left corner is the Prosperity area. You can stimulate abundance by purchasing a new green plant and placing it in this area. In fact, you can even place a plant in both locations for some extra support.
The plant represents growth and flexibility. It attracts life and positivity. If you like lucky bamboo, you can get three stalks in a vase to represent growth in your abundance and wealth. Be sure to get the straight bamboo. If you have a window in your office, consider hanging up a bamboo windchime that produces calm and soothing sounds.
Mirror for Focus and Clarity
Mirrors are used frequently as feng shui adjustment objects. They can expand your view, eliminate bad energy and add positive energy. In this particular application, place a 3” diameter, round mirror on the ceiling such that it’s reflecting down on you. It’s best to situate this mirror so it is right above your head while you are sitting at your desk. Be sure it is securely fastened to the ceiling so you feel safe. The mirror will provide support for your mental focus and clarity in all aspects of your career and work-life, which will in turn provide abundance and support.
These three tips are easy to implement and it is something that I am going to be changing around in my office personally. I am all for any tips to bring about more positive energy, mental clarity and prosperity to my office. What about you? Do your practice some of the feng shui tips in your home.
I have never thought about harmonizing and balancing my surroundings to keep the invisible forces around me flowing. But I am willing to try it to see if I can benefit from Feng shui.
What an interesting post! I have to admit that I kinda got stopped at the mirror-on-the-ceiling part, though; I’m afraid that’s a bit much for me. I do love having plants around, though, and I might just try to get my spouse to let me put one in the Prosperity Corner of his office.
Thank you for these tips. They are brilliant. I will have to have a good look at our office.
I love these tips. I had an awesome desk location in my house in Colorado. It was in a loft overlooking the living room and I could see the front door. The dog loved it too and sat at the top of the stairs of the loft. I miss that house. It had good Feng Shui principles without even trying!
That sounds lovely! I would love to have a beautiful home office…. Someday!
