Easy Split Pea Soup Recipe

My family loves split pea soup. Well, let me correct that statement – my family loves MY split pea soup. While it is un-imaginable that a kid loves peas, my son has been scarfing this down since he was a toddler. My husband hated split pea soup until I made it for him after we were married and then it was on the menu on a regular basis. I think the difference in my soup verses others is that mine is thick and hearty and it is really a one pot meal. Full of flavor and delicious too! Here is how you can change your families view of Split Pea Soup.

Easy Split Pea Soup Recipe – Slow Cooker or Not
Ingredients
  • 1 package Ham Shanks (2 -3 pieces)
  • 1 package Kielbasa
  • 1 pkg dried split peas
  • 3 medium carrots sliced
  • Maggi Seasoning – 7 shots or so
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Instant Potato Flakes
Instructions
  1. In a Dutch Oven, stock pot or slow cooker, place the ham shanks in the bottom of the pan and cover completely with water plus about 1 inch over. Add the split peas and seasonings then allow to come to a soft boil for 1.5 hours. The meat should be tender and pull away from the bones. Remove from the pot.Add your carrots cover and simmer. Meanwhile allow your meat to cool off and shred it. Add it back into the soup along with sliced kielbasa and cook for 10 minutes or until carrots are tender. Once all of your ingredients are cooked, turn to simmer and add potato flakes to thicken, stirring continually. Adjust the seasoning and serve with sliced french bread, cornbread or rolls
  2. If you are using a slow cooker, this should cook about 6 hours on high. Then pull the meat off the bone, add kielbasa and carrots and cook 1 more hour until carrots are tender. Stir in potato flakes and adjust seasonings.

Looking for a new slow cooker? I have three of them and use them all of the time. The last two that I got…I purchased from Amazon and love them!

  1. I think it’s the addition of Kielbasa and Maggi that would make it much tastier than others I’ve tried.

  5. Yum! I’ve never added potato flakes, but that does seem like a great way to add some bulk. What a perfect hearty soup for a cold day.

  6. Yummy spilt pea soap, I also grew up with it. My mom is Portuguese and made it a little different. She would add linguca to it 🙂

This is almost Split Pea Stew! and I just love that! I love peas and so does my hubby but my son would rather walk across glass than eat a pea. He has hated them since he was a child. So I rarely had them on the menu. Now that he has gotten his own place…bring them on! Can’t wait to try YOUR recipe!

  10. I’ve never made split pea soup from scratch…but I do like to eat it when other people make it. Looks good.

  11. (Easy Split Pea Soup Recipe) I love making split pea soup in the colder months. I make all sorts of homemade soups in my crock pot all the time. Will give this good recipe a try real soon.

  12. I use guar gum powder if I don’t have potato flakes. My soup is usually green but I thought before reading you might have used turmeric for the golden yellow. I think I’ll add that anyway. Looks so good.

    • Deb, it really is green. Just the monitor or my camera is probably making it appear more yellow.

I grew up eating split pea soup, but only started making it last Christmas when I was trying to find uses to cook our leftover ham bone from Christmas dinner. My kids actually like it so I make it a few times a year. I like how you add Kielbasa and potato flakes. I’m going to try that!!

  14. My goodness this does look easy and super good. I love making recipes like this during this time of year. It’s cold and rainy here wish I had a bowl right now. Thanks for sharing this one and have a great day.

  15. Yummy! I had never thought about thickening it up with the potato flakes…fabulous idea!
