Thompson’s Water Seal Exterior Wood Stain

Thompson's Water Seal Exterior Wood Stain

For the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of reviewing several great products from the folks over at Thompson’s Water Seal. Today, I am reviewing another one for all of you who have various home improvement projects that you may be working on.

My hubby and I do a lot of entertaining outdoors. A few weeks ago we picked up some solid wood stools at our local flea market for $2.50 a piece! That’s right, $2.50 a piece! They were in great condition but needed refinished. We purchased 6 of them and thought they would be great for our outdoor summer parties.

Thompson’s Water Seal sent me 4 cans of their Exterior Wood Stain in the pretty Golden Pine Color. This spray stain is super easy to use and comes in 4 different wood-tone colors and the coating resists UV damage. It can be used on wooden tables, chairs, planters, mailboxes, outdoor benches and more! Each can will do up to 25 square ft. so that is a lot of coverage!

We used an electric palm sander and sanded off the old finish (stain & varnish). It took us about 8 minutes to totally sand each of the stools. Once done, we lightly dusted them and took them outdoors to spray them.

Note: The top photo in this post shows one stool not touched (before sanding) and one stool that was completely sanded. Trust me, we sanded all 6 of them! The bottom photo shows the completed stool! Isn’t it pretty?

You simply shake the can for one to two minutes and then you are ready to spray your item. You will want to stand about 10″ away from the item so that you don’t get puddles of spray or drips onto the item you are spraying. You will lightly spray your item and then use a clean rag to wipe off the spray. If you need an additional coat, waiting 15 minutes and then spray again. (We found that one coat was perfect for us!).

Each stool took about 10 minutes to do (spraying and wiping off the excess stain) and then we left them air dry out in the hot sun. Since it was 91 degrees out, they were totally dry in an hour!

Your really got a bargain at your flea market with those stools. After you sanded and finished them they look really nice.

  2. I’m so glad I read your review on Thompson’s Water Seal. My daughter just bought a house. Left behind were some stools. She hated the thought of throwing them out because of the chipped paint in a color she hated. 🙂 I’m going to lead her to your review because this sounds like an answer to her doubts. :)It also sounds so simple and uncomplicated. Thanks again
