The Caretakers By Shauna Nosler Book Review

I love reading. I have been an avid reader since I learned to read in kindergarten. Sadly, I don’t get to read as often as I used to with my work and I seriously need to change that. I just finished a fabulous book that has reminded me of why I love reading so much. The Caretakers by Shauna Nosler.

This book of fiction is set in 1972 in the Pacific Northwest and it about a family that has suffered personal loss and emotional loss. The story is mainly told through the eyes of an 11 year old, her father and her aunt. The author has created a story that weaves through childhood at the family home that brought so many memories back to me of my own childhood… spending summers at Grandmas with cousins, family and friends. The mystery and secrets and spending hours upon hours playing outside with your wild imaginations and the peace that comes from familiarity of the routine.

The story starts very dark and the situation that causes that darkness runs through the entire story line, intricately woven by the author. The story tells of loss, pain and heartbreak and yet the stabilizing factor of outwardly strong adults that guide delicate souls through the tough and tender years with love and understanding that finally bring happiness and release for all. You can feel the struggle of the characters as they learn let go of the emotions and break down barriers that hold them back.

The Caretakers is a game you will not forget; it is reality and it can be each one of us too. Ms. Nosler has created a story that brings tears over and over and smiles many times too. As I read, many times I found tears just rolling down my face. The tears are not all happy tears, but you are brought right into the emotion and feelings felt by the characters. They become your family and the story becomes your story. Calm acceptance, a new found trust and opening of the hearts heals the wounds and ends the fabulous story.

This book of fiction is written from the heart of the author and tells a story that you want to read. It jumps back in forth in time which can catch you a bit, but I loved this book. It is written from a standpoint of familiarity… not looking in at a story, but it involves you in the story and you just keep reading and reading because you want to find out more and more. If you want a book that is well written, flows beautifully and has a story you can relate to, you need to grab a copy of The Caretakers. You will be so glad you did.
