Storm of the i: An Artobiography – Book Review

Storm of the i: An Artobiography - book reviewThousands of books are published every year, but it’s not very often that someone creates a new genre of literature. Boulder artist and author Tina Collen, however, has indeed broken new literary ground with her unique memoir Storm of the i: An Artobiography.

The book is a lifetime artwork portfolio, a hybrid of art and narrative where Collen often lets her art tell the story. It is a fascinating and intimate self-portrait, an artobiography. At the time she wrote the book, her father hadn’t spoken to her in 15 years and she never knew why.

My Review: This is unlike any book I have ever read. I must admit I have had this book far too long before sharing it with all of you. Mainly because I was so into reading through it. When I first got the book, I just spent some time thumbing through looking at the artwork, but soon found that there were little hidden treasures, foldouts, a subtle pop-up on one page. Then I began to read, and saw how Collen worked her artwork, and personal momentos in with her memoirs to create a visual journey to go along with her story.

This personal memoir is just that, rather personal, yet at the same time the way Tina Collen shares her life’s experience through her art, and her words some how makes the reader feel comfortable. As if having been invited to share in her life.

Storm of the i: An Artobiography is also an inspiration. As a scrapbooker who has always loved documenting and journaling the happenings in our lives (especially my childrens’), this book, demonstrates the value of doing a life review. Using our pictures and memorabilia to kickstart my own life review, be it in a scrapbook, an art collage, or as done in this book, through our own artobiography.
